The action of chlorine on ammonia nitrogen can be used to create chloramines that have a bacteriostatic effect because of their high remanence. Chloramines can be formed by chlorinating a water that contains ammonium ions below the break point or by simultaneously injecting chlorine and ammonium or ammonia salts with a C ℓ 2 /N-NH 4 + mass ratio varying between 2 and 4.

Ammonia can be found in surface water, groundwater and wastewater. When this water is disinfected through the addition of chlorine, there are interactions between the chlorine and ammonia that result in the formation of chloramines. The exact form of chloramine is a function of the chlorine to nitrogen ratio, pH and reaction time.

Ammonia in wastewater and water was oxidized by chlorine to chiefly nitrogen gas with a residual NH 3 -N concentration of less than 0.1 mg/i. The chlorine was applied in the gaseous state to a stream of water and base before mixing with the wastewater, or as a solution of hypochlorite.
